Big waves pounded Bermuda's beaches Sunday as islanders rushed to board up windows, fill sandbags and stock up on water, food and other supplies before Hurricane Igor's expected arrival.

Hurricane Igor rapidly strengthened to a large and dangerous Category 4 storm over the Atlantic Ocean on Sunday. The storm poses no immediate threat to land.

IGOR became a hurricane at the 10 pm cdt update Saturday Sep 11. It is expected to become a major (Cat 3) hurricane late Monday (13th) or early Tuesday (14th).
